TOC Entry Labels for Side Nav vs Mini TOC

Post by StormCloud79 »

I have a strange one here, which I don't think is possible but any Flare people out there might have some magic of an idea!

I have a lot of topics about hardware items, each of these items has a name and a part number.

In my side nav I want the part number to show.
In my mini toc proxy I want the name to show.

I've tried all sorts of funky way of trying to get this to work but I just don't think its possible, trying to juggled linked headings and or titles but nothing seems to really work (which probably is expected to be honest, I mean who wants to different things to show, me haha)

My reasoning is that my part numbers are generally short and display nicely in the side nav of my site and then in the mini toc there is plenty of room to show the full name of the item.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Robin

Depending on how your part numbers are structured, you might be able to use jQuery to hide them in the mini toc. If you give me some examples I might be able to make a jQuery regex function for you that would work.

Hey, my part numbers have no structure to them.

In an ideal world I'd like to show the mini toc to show:

Part Number - Item Name
<title> - H1

If that makes any sense?

Yes this makes sense, though it will be considerably more tricky than just hiding strings. I think similar things have been done before by using JavaScript to look through the linked content so it's worth searching the forums for references to that (if it lets you!)

Yeh, I'll have to see what I can do if anything - thanks for the reply though appreciated.

It's possible if you use a menu proxy - but not using a mini-toc proxy.

You'll need two TOC files.
* In the first TOC file, set the TOC item labels to the partn number of the hardware item. Set this TOC file to be the primary TOC in the target properties.
* In the second TOC file, set the TOC item labels to the full description of the hardware item. In your template page, insert a menu proxy and set it to display the second TOC file.

In your output, the side nav menu will use the label from the first TOC file, and the menu proxy will use the label from the second TOC file.

@NorthEast - thanks for this.

When you use a menu proxy that is in its own topic is possible to to also get any of the headings listed out separately?

For example:

Topic: Hardware Item
H1 - Title
H2 - Part Number

Menu Proxy (in separate topic as a starting page)

Title
Part Number
Title
Part Number

Or can this only be done in an actual topic where the H1 and H2 are?

If you want the headings from inside a topic to be included in a menu proxy.
1) Open the TOC and edit edit the TOC item(s).
2) Go to Auto-generate tab, and select Compute sub-entries from linked file.
3) Choose to Insert or Replace with Computed Entries, and select the heading level Depth.
