Publishing to DITA

We are trying to publish to DITA. But I see that the Dita Output type (when I create a target) is marked as 'Deprecated'. I understand that this output type will not be supported. I think this is a problem. Are there other tools to publish to DITA? Or does anybody have any other tips?

I think I saw MadCap suggested using XML output instead. I suppose then you could use a post-build script to run XSLT to convert the XML to dita output?

I'm definitely not an expert though, so hopefully others with more experience can help. In the meantime, hopefully my words will let you do some research.
