I gave up spell checking in Flare a long time ago. Just last week I decided I was going to export the short version of my help (all 1200 Word pages of it) to Word, spell check there, and make the corrections in Flare. It would have been easier with a bigger monitor (or two), but the Word spell check is a lot less touchy. Another plus was that I could stop and start in Word without having to re-check the whole document. Word starts checking from wherever the cursor is. As long as I accept the changes in the Word version too (add them to the dictionary, etc.), every time I export to Word, the same mistakes don't get picked up again.
It still took me two days to do spell check, but it was so much easier than doing it in Flare. I don't even know if requesting a change to Flare's spell checker would help, since I think it might be partly the interface that I just don't prefer.
