ERROR message: Skipping sub-entries

Post by ccardimon »

This is the error I received:

Skipping sub-entries: Printer-based outputs do not support linking to a project: (../../../Batch Generation/Batch Generation.flprj) Compiler C:\My Files\My Projects\Virtual Genesys User Guide RH\Project\TOCs\Print Only.fltoc

I am trying to output to Word a project that contains a merged project. This would be Parent and Child projects.

How is this done in Flare when outputting to Word?

I just briefly skimmed over it, but it seems as if you already filed a bug report about this. It appears as that it is not possible to generate printed output from a merged project.

I think I remember filing the report, yes. There has to be a workaround here. I need both projects taped together somehow.

Rather than dealing with what we call a "merged" project, would it be possible to simply import the child project into the parent project?

We could therefore dispense with the merging problem, as such, altogether.

You could do that, but I assume that there was a reason for having a merged project. What I'd do is export the individual projects to Word and then copy and paste the one into the other at the place where it should be.

The reason for having a merged project is, I originally created both projects separately in RoboHelp. Then I was asked to merge the two projects into one user guide.

Hence, I had to merge the two separately developed projects in RH. Since I am now working in Flare, which does not support outputting merged projects to Word, I need to import the child project into the parent so I can ditch the runtime merging business.

Am I making sense?

Runtime merging of help systems makes perfect sense when you have multiple products or modules that may or may not all be present on a given system. This way, you can make a help system specific to each project / module, and if more than one are present the help systems will merge so that the user sees them all as one big system.

If, OTOH, your product isn't composed of optional modules etc. it's a lot easier to just build it as one big help system and not bother with the merging.
Until next time....

In addition to Kevin's comment, even if you have multiple modules that are optional, you can still use one project, and use conditions to create outputs, rather than using separate projects. You really only NEED one project; separating them out may be useful for some cases, but it is not really ever required, and in some cases may be a bad idea.

So, I'm with everybody else here. Sounds like the thing to do is make one big project.

Sounds good to me. So how do I do that? Make one big project (out of two smaller ones). I sure don't need or want the merging.
