Attempt to rename topics causing error

HI there,

Whenever I attempt to rename a topic, receive the following error:
rename.jpg
My file name does not begin with any of the characters noted in the error and this has just started happening today.

Does anyone have ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it?

Many thanks,
Paula

If you shut down Flare and restart it and rename a topic, does it still occur?

Have you installed any Windows patches recently? You might need to reinstall .NET 2.0.

Is it just one topic it's happening with or all?

I'm sure I've had that error before - or at least one very similar. I tracked it down to a hex character in my text (found it in the source code view as a little square). Obviously it wasn't valid XML and thus Flare didn't know what to do with it - causing it to throw a strop. The problem might not be in the name of the topic - it might be in the topic contents. Good luck!

I have closed Flare and restarted it but the error still occurs.
It seems to happen with many topics (not just one or two).
I haven't tried searching through the xml yet so that may be my next move.

Thanks for the suggestions!
Cheers,
P

Was this topic created outside of Flare?

Mostly they were imported from Frame.

Paula,

This happened to me with some Flare projects that were imported Word docs. We are not sure if it was caused by .NET Framework errors I was going through due to a corrupted install, caused by my 'decrypting' the files via our encryption software or if it was just related to unrecognizable objects imported via the Word import.

However, thanks to the excellent help of the Flare support team (thanks, Ryan!), I went into the XML for each topic and found the trouble-making object and removed. Make sure if you try this that you don't accidentally leave extra spaces where you delete the object or you will still have a problem.

You may also want to go into all of the topic XML pages within the particular project and just check and fix them all at once so you can be done with the problem.

Hope this helps along with all of the other good advice in the previous replies! :D
