Applying different master pages in print targets

I've developed two master pages for my print targets, PDF_Chapter and PDF_TOC. I'd like to apply the PDF_Chapter master page to all the chapters in the target, and the PDF_TOC to the table of contents. I've followed the directions in designating the master pages in the Properties dialog of the specific books in the TOC Editor.

So, for the Table of Contents topic in the TOC Editor, I selected PDF_TOC as the master page. For the very next book in the TOC, I selected PDF_Chapter as the master page. However, when I build the target, the first chapter of my PDF has the PDF_TOC master page applied. All subsequent chapters have the PDF_Chapter master page. So for some reason, the first book that uses the PDF_Chapter master page isn't picking it up. I've reapplied this, recreated my TOC, etc, but nothing I do is getting this to work.

Has anyone ever run into this problem? Does anyone know why this is happening?

Did you enable the Start New Section setting for the first chapter topic?

FWIW, what you're describing sounds like what I'm doing here (which is working for me).

Yes, I marked the Start a new section checkbox on the Printed Output tab. I'm stumped, as the subsequent chapters pick up the correct master page. It's like the first chapter of the book won't accept but the PDF_TOC master page.

Ok. Here's something to try.

NOTE: last I checked with Madcap support, this method is not supported. So make a backup of your TOC before you begin.

1) Right click on the TOC and choose Open with Internal Text Editor
2) Take a look at the code and find the MasterPage= lines. Odds are, one of them is in the wrong place (don't ask me how that would have happened though....)
3) Move the MasterPage="/Content/Resources/MasterPages/PDF_Chapter.flmsp" line to the correct location.

As an example, here is the relevant code for my TOC (which is working)

Code: Select all

  <TocEntry
    Title="Copyright Notices"
    Link="/Content/Copyright.htm"
    StartSection="true"
    MasterPage="/Content/Resources/MasterPages/Word_output_rom.flmsp"
    PageNumber="1" />
  <TocEntry
    Title="Table of Contents"
    Link="/Content/Print_TOC.htm" />
  <TocEntry
    Title="Application Portal Slides"
    StartSection="true"
    MasterPage="/Content/Resources/MasterPages/Word_output_tech.flmsp"
    PageNumber="1">
What this does is it starts my Copyright page using roman numerals as page numbering, which continues through the TOC. Then when it gets to the Application Portal Slides topic it switches to arabic numbering, again starting at 1.

Thanks so much for the tip on opening up the .fltoc in Notepad. After closely looking at it, I realized that the TOC proxy topic was merging with my first chapter because I had defined the threshold of empty topics at 50 characters. I bumped that down to 15, and now the master pages are behaving nicely.

Thanks Kevin!
