Index not jumping to place in page where Index keyword is.
Index not jumping to place in page where Index keyword is.
Hi all,
I have created an index by placing index keywords before text in a topic by clicking Ctrl-U. The Index keywords are then shown in a green box in front of the text.
When I publish my HTML output, any words I select from the Index do not jump to the places in the text where the Index keyword is placed.
Is there something I have missed out? Do I have to make the Index keyword a bookmark too to make the topic open up at the right place?
I know it can be done because Flare's own help has Index entries jumping to the right position in a topic.
Does anyone know what I should be doing?
Susan

When you say it doesn't jump to the keyword, do you mean that the keyword isn't actually displayed in the visible section of the topic?
If it is visible but just lower down the page (instead of the top), then it'll only appear at the top if the topic is long enough to be scrolled down that far.

Re: Index not jumping to place in page where Index keyword is.
I have created keywords all the down a long topic. When I click on any of the keywords in the published HTML Help, the topic is opened up at the top of the page. The page does not jump down to the relevant keyword within the topic.
There is also no highlighted text in the topic.
Ooops - I don't use Ctrl-U as I said in my first post!(Getting mixed up with InDesign) I used the Index Entry window method.
Thanks!

I don't normally use HTML Help, so I've just tested it and you're right - it doesn't jump to the keyword (as it would in WebHelp).
Submit a bug report here:

Also, index keywords aren't highlighted, that's just for search terms.

Thanks for spending time helping me out.
I have submitted a bug report although I have not ruled out that there is maybe something I have missed out.
Time will tell...

You're not doing anything wrong - if your build your help as WebHelp, you'll see it works ok in that target. It just seems to be an issue with the HTML Help target.

If you are using HTML Help as your output, Index entires will be at the top of the page, this is a limiation of the HTML help viewer as it doesn't allow mid topic index entires.

Hi,
Pete
This is true of the keywords that you embed in the HTML topic files, using either ActiveX <object> elements or <meta name="ms-hkwd"...> elements, but not of the keywords that you add to an index (.hhk) file. In the latter case, there is nothing to stop you from linking keywords to anchors in the HTML source. For example, a typical entry in the .hhk file may look like this:If you are using HTML Help as your output, Index entires will be at the top of the page, this is a limiation of the HTML help viewer as it doesn't allow mid topic index entires.
Code: Select all
<OBJECT type="text/sitemap">
<param name="Name" value="Keyword to display">
<param name="Name" value="Topic Title">
<param name="Local" value="topicfile.htm#anchor">
</OBJECT>
Re: Index not jumping to place in page where Index keyword is.
Thanks Pete,
Do you mean I should modify the .hhk file externally and link to bookmarks in the topics?

Hi, Susan,
Yes, exactly. I'd better add a caveat, though: I don't currently use Flare, so I'm not sure if the edits that you make outside Flare will survive when you next edit the index with Flare. Perhaps this is something to test before you make wholesale changes to the index file.
You can use tools like HTML Help Workshop and FAR to edit the index file.
