Hi, Nish,

Are you looking for a way to embed a version number or stamp in a .chm file so that a program installer can read it? If so, I don't believe it is possible. This is a limitation of the HTML Help format.

For confirmation of this, see the following posting by Microsoft to the microsoft.public.helpauthoring newsgroup:

"versioning .chm files?"

Flare uses the Microsoft compiler to generate CHMs, because the CHM format is a closed, proprietary format. While the CHM compiler provides many options that are not exposed in Flare, the versioning is not possible due to the limitations of the CHM compiler (as stated in the newsgroup thread posted by Pete). That means if the CHM compiler cannot do it, then Flare for sure cannot do it. You need to talk to the folks from Microsoft, but I doubt that they will ever do anything to the CHM compiler in the future or provide anything new for help authors in general. So, consider yourself lucky if someone at Microsoft will read your message, but I bet they just throw it in the trash like many other customer requests.
