Good settings for 1024 x 768 output

Anyone have recommendations on the size to make things in output of this size? Like, what fonts are most readable, and what size is good to use, etc. Any other tips? I have huge widescreen monitors and my video card won't let me change just 1 of them to 1024 x 768, so its a pain trying to check back and forth constantly.
