Problems creating a style for Notes in a numbered list

Post by todd.richardson »

I've created a li. style to use for notes that appear within a numbered (or bulleted) list. The style class has the following values, among others:

list-style: none
list-style-type: none

When I apply this style to text I want to convert from a numbered entry to a note, a number (in sequential order) still appears before the text in the XML editor, as shown in the first example below. However, when I preview the topic, the number is gone (as intended).

In the XML Editor (incorrect):

In Preview (correct):

Has anyone seen this before? A more high-level question might be, am I approaching this the right way? Should I be making a li. style for Notes that appear in a numbered list?

Thanks in advance.

The way I do this is to create a Paragraph Item in the list item (you can do this in the list actions menu in the toolbar above the XML editor). If you then use the "Move Left" option in the menu, it removes the number / bullet for the paragraph item. Net result is you have a P tag inside your list, using the list's indent level so it looks seamless. You can then apply any P classes you want to the paragraph.
Until next time....

I did as you suggested - made the text into a Paragraph, moved it left, and applied a p. for Notes. However, I'm still seeing differences between the editor and Preview.

In the Editor:

In Preview (notice that extra padding has been applied to the Note):

I'm aware of the Preview issues in Flare - should I assume this is simply another one of those? Or is there something with the style itself?

Code: Select all

p.N1NoteUnderNumbered
{
	border-left-color: #00365b;
	color: #00365b;
	margin-left: 10px;
	margin-top: 4px;
	list-style-type: none;
	list-style: none;
	padding-left: 8px;
	border-left-width: 2px;
	border-left: solid 2px;
	font-family: Arial, sans-serif;
	font: Arial;
	font-weight: bold;
	font-size: 10pt;
	padding-top: 4px;
	padding-bottom: 4px;
	background-color: #f5f5f5;
}
Thanks again.

I think it might be the margin-left: 10px - it would be worth trying, at any rate.

At the end of the day, of course, what matters is how it looks on your customer's system, whether it's in a browser window or in a help viewer (like a CHM or DotNet Help window). So I wouldn't worry too much about how it looks in the XML editor. It would be great if the XML editor looked exactly like your output, but in cases where it doesn't it's the output you should focus on.

It's known behavior and I've submitted it as a bug, but you should as well at http://www.madcapsoftware.com/bugs/submit.aspx. I've somewhat gotten used to it, but I'll still find myself testing it in the Preview window just to make sure that it's not a numbered list.

Thanks. I will submit it.

As for you suggestion, Kevin, it was the margin-left value that was causing the misalignment in Preview. And I understand your point - I tend to fall into the dangerous habit of treating the XML Editor as if it were a Preview.

Thanks again.

At one of the Madcap training sessions, Mike Hamilton used the term "WYSIOP" - What You See Is One Possibility. The editor is a good approximation of what things will look like, but it isn't exact (especially when you take into account all the different output formats that you can use).
