Flare 3.1 projects mangled in Flare 4

Post by Graham Campbell »

I've downloaded and installed Flare 4 this morning with great anticipation only to be met with the horror that is displayed in the attached image to this post.

Projects that render perfectly well in Flare 3.1 will not display themselves in anything like a usable format in Flare 4. There have been no amendments to my stylesheets, masterpages or the addition of a new page layout. The view is similarly bad if I select the Web layout, just without the extra spaced lines.

A few details about what's being displayed in the screen capture:
  • The newlines shown between each word are not carriage returns and cannot be deleted themselves.
Changing the justification to have the text right-aligned actually moves it to the left and off the page.
This is happening for all projects. I really hope this is a simple fix in CSS/HTML or similar but my gut is telling me otherwise. As much as I'd really like Flare 4 not to be at fault it's odd that 3.1 will render them perfectly well where 4 will not.

Try changing the Layout mode to "Web". It's in the XML Editor toolbar, a couple of icons to the right of the "F" icon. That's the viewer you're most used to seeing. The "Print" layout is the new print layout feature, so you'll want to read up on that on how to set it up.

As I suggest in my original posting, the Web layout is just as horrible - see the attached for visual aid.

Most of my docs are for printed formatting so working with the Web layout wouldn't be beneficial for me even if it did render properly. I'll check through the Flare docs as you suggest to see if I've missed a setup issue, but I still see no obvious reason why Flare 3.1 will these topics perfectly and Flare 4 won't.

What did the screen look like in 3.1? Can you display the Paragraph tags (icon next to the <t> on the toolbar) and see if anything shows up between the words/lines?

It does appear to be with your stylesheet and print medium, Once you send in the project we can figure out what is causing the issue.

I stand corrected and happily swallow my pride to admit it was a CSS issue.

Richard, I'm in your debt. Thanks so much for resolving this for me. MadCap service at its best!

The fast response is one of the many reasons why I am happy to have chosen Flare. That, and the fact that I am absolutely loving it as a tool. :-)
