Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
Hi,
I have created a template with global links to a master project. problem is that I've accidentally linked my child project to the images in my master project. How do I remove global links? Can't seem to find a way.
Thanks,

Hi Geoffrey,
Unfortunately I can't help you, but maybe you can help me.
I have put this question in the forum already, but apparently you can give me the answer:
I cannot figure out how to create a Flare import file (flimpfl) to be used for global linking.
Thanks in advance

yeah, this took me a while too. I think support helped me out finally on it. it is in the help search though if you look under global links.
anyway, here's how:
In the Project Organizer, right-click your Imports folder. Select Add Flare Project Import File. Name the file. From there you can see the Source project link where you can import files from (stylesheets, topics, etc.).
Hope that helps.

Thanks,
That is what I know already. My problem is: There must be a file with .flimpfl extinction and how do you create that one?

Oh, an upcoming idea for your problem:
Maybe you can use <t> to show the tags or open the topic with the Internal Text Editor and check if you can find the links and remove it?

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
I'm not sure I understand. Using the procedure I mentioned before will create a .FLIMP file. Once that is created, you can link to the source, choose the type of files, and click Import. but in order to use global project linking you have to have created a "master" project somewhere which you would like to link to.
Can you tell me what you're trying to do though? Are you trying to link to a stylesheet or something? I might be able to help more if I know the context better.
re: your idea. that may be one way to do it. to unlink other files, I found a way where you just edit any one setting and when it tells you that this file is linked, just click remove link and keep changes. problem is with the image files, as there is nothing you can set in order for that dialog box to show up. I'll have a look in the html though.

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
Thanks Geoffrey!
You helped me out. As always it is simple. I overlooked it.
The thing is: if the Add Flare Import File window is opened, I had to select Factory Templates. Then it goes on.
Thanks again!!!

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
Hello McCarthy,
Perhaps it is quite late, but I had an idea regarding the linked images.
Rename the linked image in the child project.
A dialog box asks if you want to remove or keep links to this image : it depends on your project.
After the image has been renamed, it is no more linked to the Master project.
I'm just testing the Global Project Linking and I have some problem with the "exclude files" field. I will create a separate post about that.
If you can help...

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
That is correct.
Something like that I do with variables.
One set is used for general things like company name, address, etc.
The other one (I named it DocVariables) contain things like document title, software version, Document revision, etc.
So, every time when I create a new project, I create the import file (which I put in the Template directory by the way) and I just change the content of the DocVariables, which lead to the pop up to break the global linking. And yes, that's just what I want. Now I never forget something.
In this way you can configure also the other stuff in your project.
I look forward to see your post about 'exclude files'.

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
It seems logical that that would work. Unfortunately, when you rename an image (or at least when I do) it only asks to update the links where it is used. It doesn't prompt you like it does with other files when you change them that it is a linked file. so renaming removes the link momentarily, but does not move the file to the Removed Links section. Next time you generate or import the global project links, the file is added again.Bea Lac wrote:Hello McCarthy,

The whole problem is that it is not being added to the Removed Links tab.
I have no problem unlinking other files (including Variables, Skins and Target files), just images.

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
You said you "accidentally" linked images to the Master project.
So I thought, in the next re-import, the image files were no more in the file list "Include Files".
In fact, for now, I have not seen the interest of the "Removed links" list...
I prefer organizing my project in order to have the right list of files to be imported in the "Imported Files" list.

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
The global linking thing is a little bit funny I think. All the members of our team have the global files set to 'automatically update linked files before building output'. The problem with this seems to come if I add a totally new file to the global project (in this case I added an image). What happens is the other people in our group automatically get linked to that file in their projects when they build a target even though they haven't selected it for import. it just sorts of add itself to their project and is linked.Bea Lac wrote:You said you "accidentally" linked images to the Master project.

What I ended up doing is deleting any files from my global project I don't want to get globally linked. So I deleted all targets, variables, topics, etc. and left just what we will globally link (stylesheets, skins, page layouts).
Since this is a new feature, it's hard to tell sometimes if I'm using it properly. Has anyone else had any issues with global linking?

Re: Global Project Linking - How do I remove links to images?
But ... what you describe is exactly what global linking should do.
You should make up your mind about what should be put in the Global project and become available for all members, and what should be used local; that is, not linked.
So, only put images in the Global project that should be used by everybody.
I hope this sounds reasonable.
