This program cannot display the webpage

This forum is for all Flare issues related to the Microsoft HTML Help target.
This target produces "CHM" files in the output.

This program cannot display the webpage

Post by ChristyPatton »

Flare v4. Creating HTML help for software application. The project is single-source output to Word and HTML. I've set up an HTML Target and use only one TOC that has conditional topics. When I compile the HTML file I get no errors but at the end of the compile in the Messages tab it reads,"The following files were not compiled:" (new line) "Generated../../VITALXHTMLHelp/Manual.chm"

The entire TOC is in the TOC pain of the HTML window but every topic displays "This program cannot display the webpage"

My copy of Flare is on my box but the project is located on the server. I cannot see this as the problem but....

I should add that my index entries are on the TOC pain but nothing works when clicked and nothing works for the search tab of the TOC pain. I'm sure I'm missing a setting somewhere but where?

In the words of the imortal Bugs Bunny....Tanx.

Hi, Christy,

Microsoft introduced some security restrictions a few years ago that disable functionality in HTML Help files that are accessed over a network, so what you're seeing is almost certainly by design. There are two possible solutions: move the help file to your local drive, or implement some changes in the Windows registry so that you can view the contents of remote help files.

For information on how to make the registry changes, see this page:

http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/ ... 896358.htm

Or more straightforwardly, use the free HHReg utility available from the page below to make the required changes.

Just to add to Pete's advice, if your customers are intended to run the help from a network location they would also have to apply the registry change. Usually, asking customers to do that doesn't go over very well (most customers aren't comfortable working with the registry, and in many cases IT departments won't even allow them to make changes even if they want to). Additionally, having your application install change system security settings is also often viewed as a non-friendly thing to do by customer IT departments. So my usual recommendation is if the help is going to be accessed though a network you're better off with WebHelp instead of HTML help.

On the other hand, if your application is normally installed on a local drive of the customer's computer, this issue won't come up and HTML help is perfectly viable.
Until next time....

Yup, I found it in the KB just as your responses came in. Copied the file off the server and sure enough it works.

though, Tanx!

Just for future reference:

I've been having a similar problem as Christy. I was generating HTML Help, but getting a "Page Cannot be Displayed" error when I view the output.

From the suggestions in this thread, I changed the HTML Target's Output Folder, to generate the project on my own desktop. Works like a charm.

Thanks!
