Operation Rename Failed: Object reference not set.....

Post by Michael »

I'm getting the following error when I try to rename topics in my projects - Operation Rename Failed: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. It seems to rename the topic, however all the links to and from that topic are lost. This is happening for all my projects and is only happening on my PC, there must be a config issue somewhere

An ideas?

Cheers

Try updating your .NEt framework to 3.5 , if its only focused on your machine its probably related to that. Do you have anything running on your PC that is active while you are working on flare that your collegeus are not using?

I don't think that 3.5 is needed, since Flare's system requirements state that 3.0 is used. Installing 3.5 (or even better 3.5 SP1 - which oddly enough is five times the size of 3.5) probably won't hurt, but I'd be very surprised if it fixes it. If reinstalling the DotNet runtime I'd go with 3.0.

Thanks for your responses guys,

After talking with the very patient and helpful Alvaro in Tech Support, he found that the solution was to reset the window layout. There seemed to be a floating window somewhere in my layout structure. Anyway, he said this was a bug, but was very hard to replicate.

This seems to have resolved my issue.

Thanks again

I'm just posting to let anyone else know (and me in 6 months time when I've wiped my brain) that I solved this by deleting the contents of the "C:\Documents and Settings\user.name\Application Data\MadCap Software\Flare" folder for XP.

Deleting the contents of the Flare Application Data folder worked for me (actually, I just renamed folder I found there - it didn't get recreated, but I no longer get the error, and everything seems to be working okay).

On Windows 7 the path is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MadCap Software\Flare.

Flare will recreate that directory if its not found, so deleting its not a problem

Dear madcaps,

I have this problem and have tried the solution described here but to no avail. My last attempt used this procedure:
  • Close any floating windows
  • Close Flare
  • Rename the C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\MadCap Software\Flare folder
  • Open Flare
  • Build the document (happen to be a PDF)
  • Error: Operation Rename Failed: Object reference not set.....
  • The Error log reads like this:
    • Processing topic: 1076_ProcessDetail.htm
      Linking cross-references...
      Creating chapters...
      Paginating...
Compiler (Internal Error): Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
      Aborted.
I should also mention that i have generated this output successfully previously. And I have completely recreated the TOC in case there was a problem there.
Any suggestions?
Thank you......................... liz

Hello madcaps,

I seem to have identified the problem, I suspect it's a bug.
If I have this configuration it doesn't work
16-04-2012 16-12-06nok.gif
This has an unlinked book immediately after a book
But this does
16-04-2012 16-11-52ok.gif
In this case I moved the unlinked book to below a topic. I have not changed anything else so all the components items are the same.

I have done a lot of testing and think I have identified the pattern, which I will report as a bug.

The problem in the end was a "corrupt" page layout. It was clear what exactly but in the end I recreated my page layouts, recreated the topics with the problem and all, thuis far, is ok
