Upgrade from 2.5.2 to 4.1

Post by FranE »

Hi, all!

I have been using MadCap Flare 2.5.2 to generate .chm and .doc output.

The 2.5.2 is installed on my old laptop.

I was issued a new laptop and told to go to the MadCap Flare download site - which features a trial version of 4.1.

Can I install 4.1 on my new laptop and then import my 2.5.2 projects from my old laptop to my new laptop and use 4.1 to edit my 2.5.2 projects?

Richard Ferrell was very helpful in explaining to me that I can intall 2.5.2 on my new laptop after first uninstalling 2.5.2 on my old laptop.

Now that I might have the option of 4.1, I'm trying to understand how compatible 2.5.2 and 4.1 are.

Thanks,

Fran

Moving from 2.5.2 to 4.1 should be easy; however, going back to 2.5.2 would be problematic. 4.1 adds some new Madcap-specific styles to the stylesheet and has additional controls in some of the parts of the project (targets for example). As a result, anything you saved in 4.1 may not work well in 2.5.2. So if you need to be able to work in 2.5.2 you'd be best off not to upgrade.

Having said that, 4.1 adds some substantial improvements over 3.1, which in turn was much better than 2.5.2, so if you can afford the upgrade, I'd say do it and don't look back
Until next time....

Once you upgrade to Flare v4.1 you really can't go back to version 2.5.2 so you will want a backup copy of the project, also you always download the trial of v4.1 and test with that to see if you are happy.
