Auto-numbering for Print Output: Volume Number

Post by Simon »

Dear All,

I am trying to create a Word document with numbered headings. My Flare (3.1) table of contents looks like this:

Section 1
- Chapter 1
- Topic 1
- Topic 2
- Chapter 2
- Topic 1
- Topic 2
Section 2
- Chapter 1
- Topic 1
- Topic 2
....

The section and chapter entries are just folders with "Start New Section" and "Start New Chapter" applied to them. The title in each topic is formatted as h1 so I applied auto-numbering to h1 of the form: {secnum}.{chapnum}.{volnum}. The section numbers and chapter numbers behave as expected but how do I increment the volume number?

I actually have this working now using: {secnum}.{chapnum}.{Cn+} but it still bugs me that I can't work out what the volume number corresponds to.

Cheers,

Simon

Did you ever find a solution to this issue. I am experiencing the same issue but even one level deeper as I need the volumes to have sub volumes. Granted I am new to Flare but I would think this should be something easy to implement.

I've never used it myself, but based on the first post, I think the topics are supposed to be indented under the chapters, so that the TOC is set up for three levels deep. That would theoretically associate the volume number to the topic, the chapter number to the "chapter" books, and the section number to the "section" book. Unless that is how the TOC is set up and it was just this forum stripping out the spacing in the first post.

Is your TOC set up as:

Code: Select all

Section 1 (book)
    - Chapter 1 (book)
        - Topic 1
        - Topic 2
    - Chapter 2 (book)
        - Topic 1
        - Topic 2
Section 2 (book)
    - Chapter 1 (book)
        - Topic 1
        - Topic 2
BTW, did you enable the option in the TOC entry to use section numbers?

It's also possible that the Section 1, Chapter 1, etc., books can't be empty. You may need to have actual topics associated to those books.

I have pretty much what you described.

- Section 1
=> -Chapter 1.1
=>=> -Volume 1.1.1
=> -Chapter 1.2
=>=> -Volume 1.2.1
- Section 2
=> -Chapter 2.1
=>=> -Volume 2.1.1
=>=> -Volume 2.1.2
- Section 3
=> -Chapter 3.1
=>=> -Volume 3.1.1
=> -Chapter 3.2
=>=> -Volume 3.2.1
=>=> -Volume 3.2.2
(sorry I could not figure out how to get the indenting to show properly in the forum)

The problem is that the volnum number regardless of what I set up in the Master TOC remains 1. So I have to use the following formula in my volumne headers to get the appropriate numbering (h4).
{secnum}.{chapnum}.{Cn+}

I should just be able to use {secnum}.{chapnum}.{volnum}

The TOC proxy is working properly and picking up what ever is specified in the header and displaying it. The issue I face is what if I need to go a level below volume and the fact that with PDF output specified a chapter break means a page break in the output which I do not want.

Thanks for the assistance
