Frame 7, Flare 4.1, WebHelp output
I use a lot of non-breaking hyphens in my content (because the product name includes a hyphen ("on-Q")). I use "Esc hyphen h". It appears that Flare drops these hyphens completely, so I end up with "onQ".
Anyone else experienced this? Workarounds?
Thx

Re: non-breaking hyphen getting lost?
So when you add "Esc hyphen h" are you in Frame or Flare? Because I think that command is only in Frame, not in Flare.pdxwordsmith wrote:Frame 7, Flare 4.1, WebHelp output
I haven't been able to find any info on non-breaking hyphens in Flare. However, one way to achieve the same effect in Flare would be to create a span style with the "white-space" attribute "nowrap" and then apply that to "On-Q." So in your Flare text editor you'd see something like:
<span class="NonBreaking">On-Q</span>
This tells Flare (and browsers, etc.) not to allow this hyphenated word to break over a line.
You could also save "On-Q" with this special formatting as a snippet.

Re: non-breaking hyphen getting lost?
The non-breaking hyphen is in Frame, but gets lost in the conversion to Flare. I'm not yet ready to abandon Frame, so I can't really use snippets (already checked into that since variables lose their formatting on conversion to Flare).
Thx.

Re: non-breaking hyphen getting lost?
I am also in the same boat, having a number of terms that use hyphens in my documents. I worked on this for quite some time, and unfortunately came to the conclusion that there is no way to get a non-breaking hyphen in Flare that converts over to FrameMaker.I use a lot of non-breaking hyphens in my content (because the product name includes a hyphen ("on-Q")). Sorry for the bad news.

Suggest sending a bug report through to MadCap. Until it is fixed, you could use a PassThrough marker with the text

I know you posted this months ago, but could you please explain to me what a PassThrough marker is?
Thanks,
Bonnie

Re: non-breaking hyphen getting lost?
Passthrough markers can be used if importing from FrameMaker to Flare. In FrameMaker you set up a marker called PassThrough. In the marker you enter raw XHTML code, and Flare will "pass through" that code untouched into Flare. It is really useful and quite powerful, a few possible examples: you can reference a graphic by typing <a href="xyz.gif" /> , create mini TOCs by entering <MadCap:miniTocProxy class="" />, and as mentioned in this thread, enter the HTML code for a symbol.

Gregg,
Thanks very much for your explanation of a PassThrough marker.
This information will be very helpful to me.

Re: non-breaking hyphen getting lost?
Is this still a problem in 5.0.1?
While I am an experienced Frame user I have not used pass-through markers. Does this technique require replacing all non-breaking hyphens with the marker?

Re: non-breaking hyphen getting lost?
What I was trying to do was to get non-breaking hyphens to go from Flare to Frame output. There is no way to do it.While I am an experienced Frame user I have not used pass-through markers. Does this technique require replacing all non-breaking hyphens with the marker?
Pass-through markers did not work for me. I gave up on trying to export to FrameMaker for this reason. I am working on going straight to PDF instead.
Sorry for the bad news. If this has been fixed lately, I haven't heard about it.
