PageCount variable is incorrect

Post by helen »

Happy New Year :D

Now, I am in the process of moving my Projects over to take advantage of GPL, however I seem to be having some issues with the Page Count variable. I have 5 pages of start stuff that uses the PageNumber variable in RN format, then I manually set the start of the first proper page to be, say 6 Decimal (for example) and the footer then takes the form page X of Y.

So for example:
Title Page (no page number displayed)
Disclaimer (ii)
Document Info (iii)
TOC (iv) + (v)
First Main Topic (Set to 6 Decimal in the Printed Output tab of the topic properties in the TOC)

All the topics up to the First Main Topic are in a TOC of their own from my Global Project. I have tried degrouping them from the TOC and it makes no difference.

What I'm seeing on page 19 is "Page 19 of 19" - great. However, there's 2 more pages; then I get "Page 20 of 19" and "Page 21 of 19".

Does anyone have any ideas where my System.PageCount variable maybe a little confused? I'm not seeing this behaviour in another project that's also using the same master Project. I have tried allowing it to "Continue from previous" for my first main topic and that produces incorrect numbering - for example if the TOC finishes on page 5 (v), my First Main Topic numbers itself "Page 5 of 19", when it should be 6 - hence I manually set it. Could that be a hint in the right direction?

Thanks in advance if you can shed any light on this one.

Update: It works if I set a new Chapter at each topic and I do not force my first topic to be a certain number. However - that leaves me with page v followed by page 5, which isn't so good.

In fact - it appears to be assuming (incorrectly) that each topic in the imported "front matter" TOC is only going to be one page long. If it is - the page numbering works perfectly. My TOC spills onto two pages and that seems to cause the problem and cause it to incorrectly number the first main topic - forcing that numbering has an undesirable impact on the "Page x of y" counting. If anyone has a solution / work around I'd be happy to hear it!

I've got a support request open for it - thank you! If it's a bug I shall log it, I really hope it's not though, it's very annoying!

If you have a support ticket open for it, you should be fine: if it is a bug, the support rep at Madcap will make sure it's entered into their system.
Until next time....

Okay, just in case anyone else needs the information or pulls this thread up on a search. MadCap support have tracked the issue down (thankfully), it was because I was using a percentage in the size of my <p> tag (I'd been experimenting with relative sizes). As soon as I changed that to default (as Alvaro had said) - the page numbering worked perfectly. I don't think I'd have tracked that down in a very long time! Many thanks! :madcap:

Relative sizes are important for online output formats, but they are not appropriate for print output formats. So probably the best thing to do would be to set all font sizes in your Print medium to use an absolute size rather than a relative size. (Points would be the most consistent unit to use for print.)
