WebHelp Dying in Windows 7

Post by Pohutukawa »

Other than creating the online Help (WebHelp) I don't have a direct hand in experiencing this situation, but one of our developers has reported the none of the WebHelp works when our product is installed in Windows 7. That is, the product runs OK, but not WebHelp. The developer reports that "nothing happens" when he selects items from the Help menu.

These Help menu items worked fine when running XP or Vista.

Is he running the help from his local computer or from a web server?

I don't think Windows 7 is officially supported yet, since it's still in beta. Typically what's happened in the past is Madcap hasn't begun supporting new operating systems and browsers until the version of Flare that is released after that OS or browser becomes available as a fully released product.

I would suspect, though, that Microsoft has made a change to the security settings that prevent web content from running locally. This was the case in XP and Vista as well, but you could get around it by using the Mark Of The Web setting. Maybe Microsoft discontinued support for that setting? (Just a guess - I have no direct knowledge of any changes coming in Windows 7.)
Until next time....

Wonder if it runs in Firefox on Windoze 7? I wonder if it runs on XP using the IE 8 beta....

(I.e. is the problem specific to Win7, all browsers, or just Win7 IE? And if it is IE, then is IE 8 affected on all platforms, or just on Win7? )

Hmmm...I'll take a look at this on 7 tonight if I get the chance...I've been meaning to install Flare there for testing for a while anyway. :)

Are you interested in any bug reports on it, Richard?

If I were Madcap, I wouldn't worry about it yet. Since Windows 7 is a year out or thereabouts, too many things could change between now and then to worry about developing against it. Wait until Microsoft has an RC before trying to be compatible.

And wait for Microsoft being compatible with established standards before using any of their stuff. The question isn't if it works on Windows or IE or whathavenot, the question is if the pages are standard compliant.

Not currently, With the way Beta's are always changing its very difficult to write code for it, as what is in the current release will may not be in the final release...
