Dear Madcaps,
I am sure this is possible but can't find it.... I want to add the equivalent of a post-it (yellow sticky) to a topic, something I need to remeber to do but is not part of the topic an will eventually be screwed up and put in the bin. Is this possible?
thank you............ liz
Adding non-printing comments to work in progress
Re: Adding non-printing comments to work in progress
Easiest way is to create a new conditional tag, maybe call it "UserNotes", give it an obnoxious color, like bright yellow, set the targets to exclude that conditional tag, then type text in a topic and apply that conditional tag to the whole paragraph (NOT the whole topic). When you open the topic you'll see the note, but it won't appear in any of the outputs.
I do something slightly different. I have conditional tags called "topicReady" and "topicNotReady". There are neither included nor excluded from any of the targets, which means they're inherently included in the output. I apply the appropriate conditional tag to the topic at the topic level, so that the color block next to the topic name in the Content Explorer displays one color or the other. That way I can tell at a glance if I need to go back into a topic to finish something or not.
When you put a conditional tag at the paragraph level then you don't see the tag color next to the topic name, so you might want to do a combination of tags. One at the topic level so that you can tell easily that you need to address something in the topic (not excluded), and one at the paragraph level inside the topic so that you can leave notes to yourself or others about what needs to be finished (excluded).

I tend to go one step further. I'll highlight it with a conditional tag called DoNotUse, which is excluded in all of my targets. Then I'll stick in an index token called Follow Up. The Follow Up index tokens show up in the Index Explorer, giving me a quick way to get back to all the stuff that I need to finish up before release.
