Glossary and TableOfContents

Post by pantherts »

Hi everyone! Happy Friday! To get right to the problem, basically I'm having an issue with the search results in my Microsoft HTML Help output. I've noticed that when searching for any term on the search tab somewhere in the results appears the "Glossary" and "TableOfContents" twice! So, to restate that for clarification, in the G's of the search results I have two "Glossary" terms appearing and then in the T's I have two "TableOfContents" appearing. I don't recall this ocurring before but then again I'm not sure I would have noticed this if it weren't for a fellow co-worker pointing it out to me. I do use conditional Print tags for my output so I am not including the glossary topic in this output. Anyone else have this issue or been able to resolve it? Thank you!

Where are you applying the conditions? In the TOC or in the topic or both? If you are only applying it to the TOC then the glossary and table of contents are still included, they just don't show up in the TOC. You would need to also apply the condition to the topic files to ensure they aren't included at all.
Until next time....

Okay I just changed some things and nothing is helping this problem. Here's what I have set for this project:

-Folder showing in Content Explorer named "Glossary" - Conditional Tagged to ONLY Print Only
-Topic inside "Glossary" folder on Content Explorer named "Glossary" - Conditional Tagged to ONLY Print Only
-Topic named "TableOfContents" in main folder showing in Content Explorer - Conditional Tagged to ONLY Print Only
-TOC for Project contains Book called "Glossary" - Conditional Tagged to ONLY Print Only
-TOC Book called "Glossary" contains topic link to Glossary topic - Conditional Tagged to ONLY Print Only
-TOC contains topic link to TableOfContents topic - Conditional Tagged to ONLY Print ONLY
-Project Target Conditional Tags are only setup to include Screen Only and exclude Print Only

Shouldn't that be enough if not complete conditional overkill?! Thanks for your quick response on this Kevin!

Hm, sure looks like that should do it.

What happens if you click on the links for the duplicate items in the search pane? Where do they go? That may give you the clue you need.

Kevin,

That's that interesting part. I double click on one of the "Glossary" results in the search result pane and the main frame shows the Glossary page only without my little vertical separator bar below the h1 heading and no left indent on terms. I click on the other one and it shows the vertical bar and the indent of the items in the glossary. All the items in both pages are clickable and when clicked expand to show the term's definition.

When I click the "TableOfContents" search result it loads the Table Of Contents page in the main frame and shows every h2 tag in my project but they don't appear as normal links (aka blue in color and underlined) they are just black. But these are clickable! When clicked they take me to each corresponding h2 tag! It's so odd!

Ah HA! I think i found something. I didn't even notice that my the folder that contains all the files in my content explorer (the highest folder) had a Conditional tag set on it. It was set to the project's name (as are most files in the project). It was overriding the print only tag i had set on the folders/topics below it. Now, when I generate it and go search for something, Glossary only shows up once in results and the "TableOfContents" is gone. Is there anything I can do about this one Glossary entry showing up in search results?

The only reason I know that an excluded topic shows up is if it also has an overlapping include. Were I you, I'd probably generate a report that lists all of my conditional tags (you're using Flare v4 right...don't think you can do that in v3), and see if there is anything that might be an overlap.
