Is there a way to include the cursor at capture?

Post by ktbCA57 »

In other screenshot tools i've used, I've had the ability to include the cursor in the screen shot... i.e., to move the cursor to a location, then capture the screen WITH the cursor as I've placed it on that window. However, I can't find a way to do this in Capture... I know you can ADD cursor after capture in the capture editor... but that is an extra step for me in most cases. Is there a way to just include the original cursor placement when I capture the window?

Thanks.

Not that I know of, but most of the time one wants the capture without the mouse pointer. What is rationale for having it in there? I am asking since I'd never think about doing that, but since it appears to be common practice for what you plan to do I might just miss some good reason.

I use it to

1) draw more attention to a particular area of the screen (e.g., click the RETRIEVE button)

2) and similar to item one.. it's sort of a landmarking feature to me...

i've MORE OFTEN THAN NOT included the cursor in screen caps. and other tools i've used have allowed for it... and i find myself adding the cursor back in - which is a pain.

may have to use another tool in addition to or instead of MC Capture.

No, there is no way to include the mouse pointer. You can only add it after the fact.

THANKS... THAT'S DEFINITELY A DRAW BACK FOR ME... it also appears that you can get caps of pop ups, flyovers, dropdowns etc.. on the page... you have to do those separately and combine the images... not so good for me...

What you could do is get one of these free tools that take screen videos, create a cheesy AVI from it, play that (in full screen), and then make the screen shot. Sure, more works as well, but it will give you exactly what appears on screen.

Thanks for the pointers (pun intended) about why one would want to have the pointers included.

In the first place it would be nice to have an option putting on pointer grab yes or no.
On the other hand, sometime ago I created some basic polylines and put them into 'MyPalette'.
Whenever I need to pay attention to a certain button, dialog or whatever, I drag one of the 'pointers' in 'MyPalette' to the location where I want to have it. Then I move the Start or End of the polyline when needed and ready.
Maybe 2 or 3 seconds work, but not bad.

Hi,

You stated
it also appears that you can get caps of pop ups, flyovers, dropdowns etc.. on the page... you have to do those separately and combine the images
Are you running V3 of Capture? If so, you can select the region you want to capture, and then using the time delay option, set a suitable period before the capture takes place, allowing you to select dropwowns, flyovers etc.

Just a thought, as I have used this option without any problems for capturing drop-down lists etc.

Additionally to what Adrian pointed out, in the toolbar above the captured image there is a Cursor Mode tool. This allows you to place a mouse pointer wherever you need it - you can also include a highlight around it to make it more visible if you want.
Until next time....

Thanks Kevin,
Great, but simple tip. I have overlooked it several times.

Most tools I used previously have an option to include or exclude the cursor, and this is an issue for me.
I'm in a section explaining how to adjust a column width, and I want to show how the cursor changes shape when you move onto the column border.

so are you saying it's an issue because you need to include the cursor in your capture.. I'm assuming so.. to me the added step of having to add a cursor is an extra step i don't necessarily need or want to have to take time to do... I'd rather use something like SnagIt...

FYI, imho snagit adds the cursor post capture albeit automatically and unknowingly to most users. that's why its not apparent to most ppl.

Capture could do the same actually. but you got ta point.

should file a bug report.

Another thing that SnagIt does NICELY that Capture does not... capture open menus... I'm finding that really annoying... that i can't just simply go in and open a menu and "snap" a cap of it...

yes.. you can get a menu (i believe thru the "delay" setting) and you can get a cursor to show up.. but both require an extra step.. and i find that tedious and inconvenient...

SnagIt does both easily and there's an EASY way to remove the "include capture" setting..

I also don't like the "props" files i always get either... but who am I to complain?

I think a lot of things can be improved in Capture, but I have also to break a lance for it. There are also many things I like (Especially the variables I can include and the recapture feature!). I use it every day and yes, sometimes I need SnagIt.
In Capture I have to do those menu- an popup-things also. I have set the "delay" to 3 seconds by default. It doesn't bother me. Rarely I have to set it higher but it is ok with this setting.

Its the only way to provide you with all the non-destructive image resize, gaussian blur, filtering, callouts stuff. anyway the props files should be copied into your Flare projects, if you want to retain editability of your images and for easier project storage of media.

i agree..there are things that you expect and then when you try it, its not achievable for some reason..
for example fixed ratio resizing, and fixed ratio cropping (SHIFT+ Mouse drag) when you layer a screenshot on top of another...

This is something we've gotten a few requests for, and it appears that we'll be including an option to record the cursor when the capture is taken in the next release of Capture.

Suggestions like this let us know what to include and fix in future releases! Please let us know if you have any other suggestions or feedback regarding Capture and our other products via our bug/feature request form here:
