Styles not appearing in Style pane

Post by brad friesen »

I'm trying to setup a page layout for a new printed project (PDF output) in Flare and I've run into a problem. I've created new styles for both my headers and footers (p.HeaderLeft, p.HeaderRight, etc.); however, these styles are not appearing in the Style pane when I want to edit the header or footer frame.

Why aren't my styles appearing? Is there a way to make them appear, or am I going about this the wrong way? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Brad

Do you have multiple style sheets in your project? Is the style sheet applied to the topic you're working in (or are you setting the style sheet globally)? Did you add the style class manually (and if so, is it formatted correctly with semi-colons at the end of each declaration)?

Can you post the section from your style sheet that contains the classes you added?

Can you add other styles to the sheet that you can see in the style picker?

I'm only using one style sheet and it's applied globally. I've tried adding styles both manually and also using the stylesheet editor within Flare.

Here is a style that I have created.

Code: Select all

p.printHeaderLeft
{
	color: #ff00ff;
	font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium';
	font-size: 9pt;
}

p.printFooterLeft
{
	color: #ff00ff;
	font-family: 'Franklin Gothic Medium';
	font-size: 9pt;
}

First of all, there's no difference between your styles. Did you mean to have a text-align: left in one and text-align: right in the other?

Second... Did you create these styles in the default medium or the print medium? I'm pretty sure the last project I was in -- that was for print output only -- would show even those styles that I had created in the default medium, but maybe I'm wrong and it only lists styles in the print medium section of the stylesheet.

Hi Lisa

Yes I'm aware that there is no difference between my styles. I'll actually customize those once I can properly apply them :D

I created these styles in the default medium and yes the default styles do appear for both Web and Print.

Okay I'm still not having any luck with this and am getting really frustrated. I clearly must be missing something so perhaps I will try rephrasing my original question.

How does everyone else format their headers and footers when creating PDF output using page layouts?

I put mine in tables in a frame. Then I apply local formatting. It's not as elegant as doing it in the style sheet, but I'm only doing it in once place (the master page) so I don't mind.

Agreed. Tables may not be the cool way to control layout, but they work....
Until next time....

So let me get this right, Flare does not allow you to use stylessheets to format headers and footers in a page layout?

No. Flare does allow you to do it.

I just find it easier to apply local formatting for my headers and footers. I do whatever makes the most sense. I can apply it in the style sheet, which makes more sense if I expect to re-use the style in multiple locations, or I can apply the formatting locally, which makes sense if I only expect to use the style once.

I found that for me it was easier to throw my content into a table and apply local formatting to the text and table. Your mileage may vary. If you want to use the style sheet, you can. You may even find it easier. Do what is easiest for you.

Ah okay, thanks for the clarification. Now all I need to do is figure out how to get my styles to appear in the Styles pane when editing the header and footer frames.

Are you setting your stylesheet at the projet level, or the topic level?

If you are setting your stylesheet at the topic level, then you won't see custom style sheet options for the frames in your page layout. (This, I think, is a bug, because you also can't link the frame to a style sheet.)

If you are setting your stylesheet at the project level ( Project | Project Properties | Defaults tab ), then I think you'll see the custom style sheet options on the Frame. (I can't verify this, because for various reasons, I don' use the project level style sheet setting, but I think it should work.)

I'm setting my stylesheet at the project level. I've also tried setting it at both the project level and at the topic level, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

I also use tables, because I need to control the spacing and positioning of the elements in the footer. I tried creating two footer frames, but Flare didn't like that. I submitted a bug, though, because I can't think of any reason why that shouldn't work.

It's been awhile since I've been in Flare, but I seem to recall having a problem looking at styles in the page layout. I could see the first few styles, but I had a whole bunch of <p> styles and when I right-clicked on the selected text, I didn't see the full list of styles that were in my stylesheet. I had to manually open the page layout in the Internal Text Editor and apply the class that I wanted. Which was a tad annoying, because the page layout code is slightly different from the normal topic code because you may have four pages in your page layout, but they're actually just one file so you have to find the appropriate block of text.

I am using a table in the footer of my page layout, with Cell Content Style set to p.

I want to add a new p class, but the page layout seems to default to the BookStyles.css, and I cannot reset it to Styles.css. Sometimes, it shows the styles from Styles, sometimes not. I cannot find a way to link the page layouts to a particular stylesheet.

Help!
