Line numbers

Post by CanAussie »

Hi,

I have an error that tells me line such and such in the code, blah, blah, blah.

How do I turn on line numbers in the text editor so I can find this?

The internal text editor doesn't have line numbers. You'll need a different text editor for that. I use TextPad, which I quite like. There are other, free, options that also have line numbering if you prefer.

When I screw up in the code, it usually tells me lines and characters. Not all the time, but sometimes. It will say text on line x does not match text on line y

Right. But the editor itself can't show you the line number. So you have to find a different text editing tool that will tell you the line numbers.

TextPad lets you use it for free, but they pop up recurring reminders to register. I like the program enough that I purchased a copy. It seems like a good investment for, what, less than 40 bucks last time I checked?

A free alternative is Notepad++ -- it has line numbers as well.

Yep, I use this and it's good. Shows the line numbers and colours the HTML/CSS code, plus a million other useful things like comparing files.
