Glossary term links & glossary popups: how to style them?

Post by MC Hammer »

Hello everyone
I am currently working on my project's glossary for which the glossary terms have been inserted as links in the relevant topics(My output is strictly on-line and it is HTML Help). I did not select any style class (expanding, popup, hyperlink) when I added some entries directly to the glossary, which selects Popup as the default. For my different targets, I have selected Convert only marked terms which indicates that only glossary terms inserted into topics as links will be converted to popups.
I am struggling a bit with styling the glossary items as these do not seem to use MadCap | GlossaryTerm. If I change the font-color and the font-size for this selector, the glossary items do not change appearance in my topics.
It looks like glossary items are using MadCap|Popupbody attributes but then, if I edit this style, the changes do not appear in the glossary terms as far as the popup is concerned.
Have I overlooked something? Which selector sets the style of the glossary terms?
Thanks in advance.

Are you were trying to change the appearance of the terms in the topics or the Glossary pane?

Try the glossary-related styles under the DIV tag. The styles under MadCap|GlossaryTerm I think might just be for the appearance of the glossary terms as they appear in the topics. I don't show glossary terms in my topics, so I've never associated which styles they're controlled by. The styles under the DIV tag, I think, control the appearance of the terms as they appear in the Glossary pane, and as they appear in print output as well. At least, those are the only styles I've ever modified in my projects.

Hi Lisa
Thanks for your reply. I am trying to change the appearance of the glossary terms inside the topics as well as the appaerance of the popup that is displayed over the topic when the glossary term is clicked on.
I tried MadCap|GlossaryTerm for the former but it does not seem to be the correct selector, or rather, it seems to be overwritten by something else (haven't worked out what as of yet). This is strange because my glossary terms have been inserted inside topics as links and appear within <MadCap:glossaryTerm> and </MadCap:glossaryTerm>....
(As far as the popup window, it seems to follow the setting in MadCap:popupBody, which I guess is normal.)
I will have another look to try and understand what is going on.

The glossary terms inside topics, no matter what effect they launch, would be a form of hyperlink, so you need to change the pseudo-class styles beneath the MadCap|GlossaryTerm. There are different pseudo-classes, so if you haven't specified any of the effects, then I think you want the pseudo-classes that are one level down from the MadCap|GlossaryTerm parent (i.e., MadCap|GlossaryTerm > Pseudo Classes). If you specify an effect for the term, then you specify the pseudo-classes beneath the appropriate effect (e.g., MadCap|GlossaryTerm > Expanding > Pseudo Classes).

(I don't use glossary terms in my topics, so admittedly that's all theory -- I haven't actually tested it to make sure those styles work the way they should.)

Was this ever resolved? I was able to style the Glossary popup using MadCap|popupBody style. I have run into some issues with opacity though. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

I am using Glossary popups in my topics. They look and work fine in my WebHelp output.
However, when I generate HTML5 output and display in either IE or Chrome, my glossary terms are followed by several spaces.
For example:
"this may be a combination of fields like Elevation , or Building , "
where Elevation and Building are popup glossary terms.

I have tried several things to get this fixed including:
- removing the mc-closed-image (set it to none)
- set the mc-image-postion to none (because it won't let me set it to default)
- set the mc-image-spacing to 0px and 0% alternatively

Can anyone help me?

I too was having trouble with glossary term popup styling. After playing with the styles using the Stylesheet Editor, I couldn't get back to the default styling (which is really very nice: a black transparent background and white font). To return to this default I had to edit the stylesheet using a text editor by adding the following code:

Code: Select all

MadCap|popupBody
{
	background-color: default;
	color: default;
}
(By the way, I think this inability to set defaults in the Stylesheet Editor is a long standing bug and applies to other settings).
