SOLVED! CREATING A CHM

Post by ktbCA57 »

i know someone told me about this a few weeks back.. but i can't find it.. I need to create a chm for a very basic file for distribution (no bells and whistles)...

Can someone tell me how to convert the html file to chm? PLEASE?

THANKS!

EDIT: I FOUND ANDREWS EXPLANATION... CREATE A NEW TARGET, SELECT "HTML" AS THE OUTPUT FILE TYPE... RIGHT CLICK ON THE TARGET FILE, SELECT BUILD... OPEN THE OUTPUT FILE WHEN THE PROJECT FINISHES BUILDING... AND VOILA.. THERE'S THAT CHM!

thanks again Andrew!

Magic eh! That's what I love about Flare, you can easily add targets (and the defaults are also very sensible). You can very quickly demonstrate a variety of print and online formats to impress even the most sceptical of pointy-haired bosses :D

WEEELLLLL... i have not made much magic... nor feel much love... nor have i found ANYTHING easy! but i did get the chms to generate... HOWEVER.. to my surprise... once distributed... no one could open them! we got a "Navigation to Webpage was cancelled"... WHY? i've never had that happen to a chm as long as you download it onto your local drive... so what happened?

See http://weblog.helpware.net/?p=36
My guess is you are getting #2, you'll need to tell people to unblock the CHM

I agree with Greg. The simplest thing would be either a) zip the chm before emailing it to people, or b) put it on a network drive for them to download, but tell them that they *must* copy it to their local computer drive before trying to use it.

(The registry change mentioned in the kb article works, but I prefer not to bother with it since there's no way I would ever apply that change to a user's system during an install - opening security settings without the user's knowledge is really bad form....)
Until next time....

The only way I can get it to work is to change the suffix from CHM to anything else. I then zip and email them, with instructions to unzip, save to local drive with suffix amended to CHM and that usually works.
Good luck.
