Creating one, long HTML page Target out of a TOC?

Post by beagley »

I use Flare to create WebHelp and PDFs.

But sometimes I want to send a user or reviewer a single URL that contains the whole document (as defined by a TOC) as one, long HTML that I've dumped online somewhere.

This would be sort of like the PDF output, I suppose, but in HTML form.

Any tips or clever ideas of how to do this? Maybe one of Flare's existing target types can sort of produce this?

Try the target type "XHTML" output. This produces a single HTML file plus a book file so that you can view it using the Madcap viewer. It is in XHTML format, but you can look at the HTML file as a single entity. It puts style sheets and images in a separate "Resources" folder, so you'd have to dump that online as well.

Margaret-- thanks for the tip!

But it appears that the XHTML book format does NOT work with some of the MadCap custom stylesheet elements, like mc-auto-number-format, which I've unfortunately become dependent on.

Perhaps I'll just build WebHelp files, pull out the html of the topic frames, and hope for the best.

Well, if your autonumber includes a Chapter setting, naturally it won't work if you only have one HTML file (where would the chapter breaks be?) You might want to use a variation on the stylesheet with that output that doesn't make use of elements that aren't relevant in a single-file situation. That way you could keep your source topics using the same classes etc. but interpret them differently in this output format.
Until next time....

Hey Kevin,
Thanks for your comments.

Actually, no number appears at all, as if the XHTML Book completely ignores the mc style element. Like it just doesn't read it.

I use the auto-number for all my H1s and H2s, and my document ends up having plenty of those, so it isn't a "Chapter" situation that requires a new chapter to work. I don't think. Anyway, I also use auto-number for specific <p> styles for procedures. (Step 1, Step 2, etc.) The text simply doesn't appear. I get the content of the <p>, but not the autonumber text.

I've thrown a question up in the Stylesheets forum... maybe it will attract a CSS uber brain. I'm still a fumbler with this stuff.

BTW-- If you have another notion on how to accomplish the one-page, no frames, multiple topics with a TOC at the top, on the Web output, let me know!

Post the mc-autonumber-format either here or in the other thread and we can take a look. There may be something about the format that isn't compatible with single HTML output in some way. It's hard to troubleshoot without seeing the code, though.
