Some MadCap Custom Stylesheet Items Don't Work in XHTML Book

Post by beagley »

Hi,
I was trying to create an HTML version of a project that would approximate the PDF version, but be readable right in the browser (even for folks who can't read PDFs in their browsers).

So I tried out the XHTML Book output type.

Seemed to work pretty well, except that it seemed to ignore some of the key styles I used.

mc-auto-number-format is one. (Neither my h1 numbering or the numbering I use for procedures showed up.)

Any suggestions either for accomplishing my goal in a simpler way, not using XHTML Book output?

or

Anyone understand the XHTML Book type and how it relates to the Stylesheet?

Kevin suggested I post the code from my stylesheets, as maybe there is something about it that doesn't work well with a 1-page format.

Here's my custom <p.step>:

here's my <h1>:

I should note that the color setting, and other things I do (like all the p.steps are in a div.step that shoves them over to the right 4 em, etc.) work fine and are interpreted fine. Which is what led me to wonder if it was something to do with all the "mc" elements in the stylesheet.

Just for grins, what happens if you remove the GH from the h1 number scheme? (Backup the stylesheet before you make a change, of course.)
Until next time....

No change.

But I did stumble upon something interesting.

I have been opening the resulting output in Firefox.

If instead I select "View Content" from within the Flare compile window instead, I DO see numbering, on whatever that funky viewer program that opens is. That sure munges some other stuff, as I'm using some stylesheet stuff for a browser window and that viewer thing shows it in a paginated way... but maybe that's a clue?

I think that is the clue - I did a quick test on a project that generates webhelp and word files with numbering. When I generate XHTML I can see the numbers in "view content" (and displayed in my default page layout), but when I try to just view the generated .htm file in IE or firefox - no numbers. If you look at the output .htm file in a text editor you can see a whole lot of "Madcap:xxx" entries, which suggest the viewer does some extra processing before it displays the numbers.

It would be nice if Flare generated a single HTML file that could stand-alone.

We have a need for that too, and I have submitted a feature request. Please submit another! The more requests, the more likely it might happen.

Yes please!

It should be an easy target to code.

The standard, non-chunked HTML target of DocBook produces this.
