Highlighting where changes have been made

Post by etk »

Our documents are in both English and Spanish. The process is:
1. Written in English and sent to Santiago.
2. In Santiago it is converted into Spanish.
3. Changes made to the English version. That version is sent to Santiago to be updated.
Question: Is there any way for the person in Santiago to recognise where and what changes have been made? Therefore, making updating easier.

If you want something like Word's compare feature, I don't know of any way in Flare to compare to versions of a topic. You could use a text editor program (I have TextPad) to run a compare at the character level. They would have to run that on files with recent modified dates.

As a Flare solution, my first thought would be to insert a canned bit of text using a snippet that says "<<Revision here>>". You could tag the snippet with a condition so that is never included in the compiled version. Of course, the downfall is that the the English writer has to consistently mark changes.

I guess it depends on how much your documents change.

I don't have an answer for you either, but it is something I requested as well. For us, it would be for document reivews. I would definitely recommend submitting it to MadCap as an enhancement. Who knows, maybe it will get in the next release.

What I would like is the ability to do real revision tracking. Something like:
1. Create a baseline revision (say rev_1) at the project level.
2. Make whatever changes I want to the content of the topics.
3. In the build target be able to select 'Show Revisions? {x}
4. Build the output and have it show all the changes (additions and deletions).
5. Set the project to rev_2, to re-baseline the project and enter more changes.

If we could also select that we want to build the project and show all the changes between rev_1 and rev_3, for example, that would be a bonus.

Many thanks for your replies. The concept of tracking changes seems, to me, a necessary addition to Flare. I shall put in a request for an enhancement.
