"a name" anchors in Flare v3

Post by TA08 »

I'm new to Flare and I would like to add named anchors to pages within Flare but am unable to locate any information on how to do this. I would like to use this functionality between topics (I have 27) and in between pages.

For example, if a user clicks on an a name link at the top of the page the link jumps down to where the target is further down the page or from one page to a name target on another page. Can anybody help, this is really starting to frustrate me?

Thank U

What you're looking for are called Bookmarks. You can insert them using the Insert menu. To link to it, you would insert a hyperlink: the add hyperlink dialog allows you to specify a bookmark as well as a topic file.
Until next time....

Thank you for your response KevinDAmery. When I add bookmarks to pages will the hyperlinks update automatically if content is changed/moved etc like it does when inserting a cross reference link?

When you link to a bookmark the link will scroll the page so that the bookmark is at the top. The bookmark moves when you add more content before it. It marks a relative position in the topic. Deleting a bookmark will cause any link to turn into a dead link.

And with cross references, the name of the target is determined by the heading you are linking to, and if it changes, the cross reference changes as well. With a link, you set the link text, so there is no updating if the target heading changes.

You should also be aware that when you are linking to another topic, there is a bookmark button that you can use, as shown in the image below:

When you click the Bookmark button, you see a list of headings in the destination topic. You can select a a heading, and the bookmark is automatically created for you. You don't have to manually insert a bookmark at the destination heading in the target topic.

Note, however, that this button only helps you if your destination is a defined heading (h1-h5 or whatever), and won't automatically create bookmarks to other elements in the topic.
