Flare 5 Performance Seems Slow

Post by amatsumoto »

We installed V5 this week and are noticing the performance is much slower in V5 than it was in V4.2. Is anyone else experiencing this, and does anyone know why this is happening? I recently got a new machine, so performance with V4.2 was quite zippy. Now I have to wait a few seconds for Flare to respond when I open a file or select something, or when I switch between Project Organizer and Content Explorer. When I work in files that have conditional text (even just a little bit) it is extremely slow to respond to typing and scrolling through the topic.

Is there a setting we can disable to speed things up again?

Thanks!

I haven't seen any change in performance here. Though we have only had it for a short time, so maybe I'll notice as time goes by.

Aside from ensuring you have turned off phrase collection (Tools>options>Disable Phrase Collection) and making sure you are not running the project off of a networked drive, I don't know of any other performance improving tips. Maybe others could share some of their tips.

I have turned off phrase collection and cannot see any difference. We do work off of a networked drive, but that was not problem when we had 4.2. The difference in response time with v5 is frustratingly noticeable. In some cases, it seems as though Flare is locked up, perhaps in endless internal analyzer scans. Sometimes I wait minutes for Flare to do whatever it is it's doing before I can work again.

The Analyzer does seem to process much more slowly than in 4.2. And I too have phrase collection disabled.

Turn off GDI+.

View > Show > Enable GDI+ Text Renderer.

Do a scan disk. Make sure there are no corrupted disk sectors. Flare depends a lot on a healthy disk, since your hard disk is literally a database to Flare.

also you might want to try reinstalling .NET Framework 3/3.5. its worked on occasion.

BTW, what's your computer running on?

I'll try scan disk and reinstalling . NET Framework. I'm running XP.

FWIW, disabling Show Condition Indicators helps a lot. Typing is almost at normal speed in files that have conditions applied. I have Show Inline Markers enabled, so I can still see what is tagged as conditional text. It just doesn't highlight the text. Re-installing .NET Framework didn't help. I haven't done scan disk, but this is a new laptop, so I doubt scan disk will matter.

What you may also try is defragging the disk using JKDefrag. The defragger in Windows is useless.
