Javascript error and other issues in v5 WebHelp output

Post by KeithM »

The setup:
- running IE7 on WinXP Pro
- hosting the WebHelp on my computer w/IIS
- have not republished all v4 projects -- including the master -- into the merged environment with v5 yet
- have not experienced the issues before installing v5

The problems:
- Javascript error in status bar when clicking links in the v5 projects/sections (see 1st attachment)

- opening the v5 project under the subsystems folder takes over 30 seconds to load, apparently hanging on something in the .../Skin/Blank.htm file (which references the MadCapAll.js file, which has been modified for the TOC link hover and background highlight colors, but the same thing happens if I use the original MadCapAll.js file)

- refreshing the master or child projects redraws the webhelp frames, but that's about it (the master project fills the top frame with the background color where the v5 child project does not), and there is no error indicator in the IE status bar (see 2nd attachment). However, if I re-enter the URL or select it from my Favorites it loads properly.

Anyone else having same/similar issues?

UPDATE: It appears that the javascript error is a result of the mixed v4/v5 merged project environment. I just published the master project with v5 and the errors for the other v5 child projects go away, but appear in a different form for the existing v4 projects.

I was hoping to avoid republishing all of the projects in v5 as this will take an hour or two due to number/size of the projects involved, but it looks like it will fix the error.

I'm still experiencing the refresh/blank frames problem though, and the 30+ second load time on the individual v5 project has not appeared after that first time, although progress bar appears in the IE status bar and stays, and stays, and stays until I click to another topic other than the default.

I have republished all subprojects, and there's no sign of the javascript error.

However, the load time exceeded 1 minute this time (after clearing IE's cache and restarting it), this time getting hung up on .../Skin/Toc.htm.

And the F5 refresh/blank WebHelp frames problem still exists.

I'm also having a similar problem when opening a MOTW-enabled site, and I was able to reproduce the remaining 2 issues in a newly-generated Sample WebHelp site.

Submitting bug to MadCap.

UPDATE: The refresh issue appears to be tied to a plugin I had installed (Xmarks for IE...hope there aren't any others that cause problems). Once I uninstalled it, no refresh problem.

The load time is still a problem, but it can be fixed by turning the new 'Condense JavaScript Files' option off in the Target Editor on the Performance tab.
