Installing Analyzer v2.3

Post by ltnunes »

Is anyone else having issues with the Analyzer installer launching? We have experienced a several minute delay; enough to cause one to click again only to end up with several instances appearing at the same time.

There was a slight delay for me, but it was less than a minute. I used to see that all the time -- and take considerably longer -- on my old computer, and I blamed it on McAfee Enterprise because it scanned the files. Since I got the new computer which started out with McAfee installed (instead of McAfee being installed 2 years after I got the computer), I haven't had any delays until now. McAfee was scanning, but it's possible that the delay is part of the program and it's checking to see what other MadCap programs I have installed, although you'd expect the installer page to come up immediately and indicate that. Or it is because of McAfee, or whatever virus scan software you have.

I encounter that every single time I am forced to install an application that is packaged as an .msi. I squarely blame that one the utterly misdesigned Microsoft Installer, which has the performance of a cheap calculator from a gumball machine. IT admins love it though as they can use ready-to-go scripts to push apps to clients.
Especially for .NET applications a simple self-extracting ZIP archive with a default path should be fine. After all, .NET allows one to build applications that do not need anything to get registered, just like Java always did it.

We're only seeing this with Analyzer. I installed for a coworker yesterday and warned him that there would be a delay (from my experience) so to "sit on his hands" for a bit while we wait. But then the wait got longer....and longer...checked Task Manager to see if anything was runnning in the background somewhere...nothing. So, the "click fest" commenced. By the time the Analyzer install finally launched we had several instanced to close as they all appeared at once.
Nothing else was running on the machine at that time. For once I had the sense to close all programs and check the anti-virus to see if it was scanning.
