Auto-updating TOC links

Post by phanna »

Hi there,

I moved my project to a new directory and am now doing some cleanup. I noticed that all my TOC links are now broken. Is there a way to bulk update these rather than having to go each TOC entry and re-select the appropriate topic?

Many thanks!

Depends on how you did it. If your project was at C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\My Projects\ProjectA, for instance, and you moved (using Windows Explorer) the entire folder to C:\HelpProjects (so it's now C:\HelpProjects\ProjectA), then you shouldn't have a problem, other than you'll need to clean up the project list on the Start page in the Flare GUI by removing the project listed at the old location (it'll appear in bold red font to indicate it's no longer there) then adding the project at its new location.

If, however, you mean you moved the .flprj file from the root of the ProjectA folder (for example) or moved the Project folder within ProjectA and so on, then you created other problems. So did you move the entire project folder (ProjectA) or did you move items within that project folder (.flprj file, Project folder, Content folder, etc.)?

And all that's assuming you don't use source control. That's a whole other kettle of fish.

I opened a whole big kettle of fish - largely due to source control nightmares. I needed to clean my slate so to speak. So I move everything, the whole folder, etc. Everything is now working as expected but I'm looking for a way to avoid manually updating the TOC.

Like I said, you shouldn't need to, unless you also moved topics or moved everything down a level (i.e., moved it from a top-level folder to a sub-folder).

Did you move from your computer to a networked drive? I didn't test that, although the links in the TOC are relative, not absolute, so it still shouldn't have caused a problem.

No, I didn't move it to a network drive I picked everything up and moved it to a new directory on my local machine.

Oh I think I am a big moron. I just checked my Target and it was set to the incorrect TOC. I'm rebuilding now to see if that fixes the issue (I'm willing to bet it will). Woops.

Yes, I am indeed a moron in this case. Everything is now as it should be and the TOC was actually updated correctly. So sorry to waste your time and thank you for the help! :)
