Content Explorer/Organizing Folders question

Post by madcapnewbie »

Hi,

When I started my project I named my folders after their chapter heading titles, sans chapter numbers. For Example, Introduction, Cameras, etc.

I asked our intern to rename these folders so that the chapter number was included. However, he created all new folders and moved the topics to the respective folders.

So, I essentially have duplicate folders: Introduction and CH1 Introduction.

I tried deleting all of the folders that didn't have chapter numbers in front of them but everytime I regenerate they appear again.

Any ideas?

Super annoying

Do you mean they are included in your output folder each time, or do they reappear in Content Explorer when you have deleted them?

Are you using source control? Could it be loading the old folders from there?

Also, I recommend getting rid of spaces in folder and filenames. When you create WebHelp, the spaces are converted to the space character code (%20) and that can throw off some browsers.

No, I'm not using source control.

We did import everything from word but I was pretty sure that I went through and remove all the links to the word files.

P.S. I was trying another trouble-shooting method and I accidentally deleted my resources folder in windows explorer.

I had a back-up of the guide and I copied over the resources folder but my images aren't showing up.

Are there recovery steps?

Thanks,

Ken

my 2 cents
after you rename the folders, close any open topics that you have open in the workspace. This is so that you don't save any topics to the old folder (creating the folder names) its a long shot but a possibility, albeit low one in this scenario.

The initial troubleshooting checking question about Source Control being used is good. Sometimes when you work offline and then attempt to online and connect to source control like Team Foundation Server, team foundation server just downloads all the folders stored in its remote database onto your computer.
If you submit your bug feedback request here, the more likely it'll get fixed or included in a future release

Yeah, it's really strange. The old folders just re-appear everytime I regenerate (build the PDF).

Problem Solved!!

Long Story Short: We initially imported everything from word and the import files (.fltmp) in the imports folder were causing the re-generation.

As soon as I deleted those, the folders stopped re-appearing. Yay!
