How about an Index Editor?

Post by MHP »

(Forgive me if this has been discussed - the forum search says "index" is too common a term to look for!)

It would be very nice indeed if Flare had an index editor which enabled you to edit the keywords as they appear in the index, and then propagated the changes to the index markers in the topics' HTML.

Yes, in an ideal world, an index would be carefully planned. However, in the real and rushed world, the following scenarios would make such an editor invaluable:

* Producing an index in an extreme hurry. It would be great to be able to bash through the document marking up index entries, and then rationalise the results in a single place.

* Working on an inherited document. Some indexes are the uncoordinated work of several people.

* Repurposing a document. Changes in terminology and structure may require changes to the index.

Author-It supports something a bit like this. Why not Flare?

Maybe not enough people asked for it so far? Put your voice in by submitting a feature request here:

It's not as simple to do in a loose-file architecture like Flare's as it is in a database architecture like AIT, but it does sound like a great addition. If you need more endorsements, ya got mine
Until next time....

I think I submitted a request similar to that using the Index Explorer. It already lists all the terms and the topics associated with each term, so it seemed like it should be easy to allow you to rename/refine/delete the index term through that pane and have the changes filter down to all the relevant topics. Likewise, it seems like you should be able to drag-and-drop a topic into the Index Explorer under a specific term to have that term added to that topic without having to go into the topic, add the term, and save the topic. Although I don't remember if my request included that last suggestion.
