Here's the sequence of events that led to the problem:
1. Launch Flare (or X-Edit, as this same has shown up there, as well).
2. A "fatal" error that prevents launch:
This error occurred for me after two or three weeks of initial use.
3. Uninstall and reinstall Flare (or X-Edit).
4. Launch again and you get this (see screenshot):
5. The app can take up to 2 minutes to load...very frustrating.
The issue: Somehow, my shortcuts got corrupted. Ironically, the initial error message gave the first clue.
The resolution:
1. Delete your Flare/X-Edit desktop, Start menu and quick launch shortcuts.
2. Navigate to the actual EXE for the app and re-create your shortcuts (e.g. right-click and drag the EXE file to the desktop and select Create Shortcut).
After doing this...and thanks to one of our internal support desk experts...Flare opens lightening fast.

Re: Installation Package Not Found error
I've never had that problem, even when I've installed another version of Flare on the same computer where another version resided. If you had the beta version of 5 then you might have had a problem, because I think you were supposed to uninstall beta v5 before installing release v5, although I could be remembering that incorrectly.

Re: Installation Package Not Found error
Actually, this issue was experienced by four employees running Flare V5, each of us having uninstalled V4 before installing V5 (the released version, not the beta; I don't think any of us were running beta as we were using V4). Two other employees had the same experience running MadCap X-Edit.
It could very well have something to do with our environment, but that would require an effort greater than I can commit to (<: I can say (guessing) that it could have something to do with anti-virus software rolled out by our IT staff. Or perhaps something to do with "version" of Windows XP SP3 and/or .NET.
So for those who happen upon this odd bug, now you know what to do.

I squarely blame the miserable Windows Installer. MadCap, when do you give Flare a real installer that works?
