Span tags everywhere after import from Word

Post by Scotty »

I'm trying to import from a Word document, but I'm getting a tonne of superfluous span tags in Flare 7.

For example, something like this from Word:
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The dog was not amused.
...looks like this in Flare:
[The] [quick brown] [fox jumps] [over] [the] [lazy dog. The] [dog was not] [amused.]
(with the [ and ] representing visual span tag markers)

Ideas?

EDIT: I've turned on the paragraph marking and such in the Word document, there's nothing unusual that I can see.

I would also love an answer for this, as I have had these span tags since I imported Word documents into Flare 5 back in 2009. :) I always just left them there as although they are a nuisance, it does not hurt the output.

I think you need to select the Don't Preserve MS Word Styles option in the Source Styles section during import. That should do it.

If you don't want to reimport, you can select the text and click the Unformat button in the Home > Font ribbon to remove all those spans.

Diana,
Is there a way to do an entire project or will I have to select each file separately? Thanks for the tip!

If it's a long Word doc, you should reimport as Jason suggested. I don't get those spans when I use that option, and I don't think there is a way to clean up an entire project all at once.

If you have to review every topic anyway, you can select all and then use the Unformat button--it would be each file separately.

Sorry. Maybe someone else has a better idea.

Thank you Diana,
My original import was back in 2009 so I do not want to reimport but will at some time think about unformatting. I do not want to loose all the work I have done since then.

I think that's a smart idea--don't create more work than necessary. Good luck with it. :D
