Re: Borders on elements that span pages

Sadly no.

Although I am currently looking at moving to DITA, for this and other reasons.

Re: PDF md5 checksums changing

Ah! Thanks, I never thought of that.

I'll play around with a script that will change those dates and see what I can come up with (I tend to live on the command line, so I am naturally attracted to problems that can be fixed with a script).

PDF md5 checksums changing

If I generate a PDF from Flare, and then immediately generate a second copy of the PDF using identical settings, I get two PDFs that have identical content - which is what should be happening. However, the md5 checksums of the two versions of the file are different, presumably because metainformatio...

Multi-column lists in PDF

Is it possible to get multi-column lists to work in PDF output? I have tried experimenting with things like

Code: Select all

<ul style="columns: 2;>
But to no avail.

All I could find on the forums was this post from a few years ago.

Technical Support not responding?

Hi, About ten days ago I submitted a technical support query on https://www.madcapsoftware.com/support/contact.aspx?p=flare. I didn't get a confirmation that it had been received, so after a couple of days I emailed CustomerService@madcapsoftware.com. I haven't had a response. I'm not sure what to d...

Re: Changing the CSS used in the XML Editor

I agree with Greg - I'm not sure why your PDF stylesheet would look "awful" in the XML editor, unless the layout isn't set to print, or there's something quirky in the stylesheet. In this case, it is because the font for the PDF output looks nice as a PDF, but looks awful on screen. In ge...

Re: Changing the CSS used in the XML Editor

That's not what I want to do. I want to use one CSS for the editor and a completely different one for the output. One way of doing this is to create a new target, associate my 'editor' CSS with that target, and then set that target as the default target. I was wondering of there was a more elegant w...

Changing the CSS used in the XML Editor

How can I change the CSS used to display the content in the XML editor? I have read that the XML editor uses the CSS associated with the primary target, but I was wondering if there was a way of changing this without setting up a dummy primary target. (As background: I'm working on a project that ha...

Analyzer's "Unused Styles" Report

I've just run Analyzer's "Unused Styles" report on a project, and there are some styles that aren't used. Some of them are obviously legacy styles that I'm not using any more (such as h1.ChapterNoNumber). Others look like they might be used by Flare internally, such as Madcap|pageHeader.Od...

I've asked tech support about this. It isn't currently supported in Flare.

Borders on elements that span pages

In my documentation I have a few code examples that I wrap in pre elements, which I then add a border and background colour to. Unfortunately, my code examples can be long and span page breaks. When that happens, the bottom border is displayed at the bottom of the page, even if the example continues...

MadCap:conditionalText in output

I'm generating HTML5 output, and I've noticed that I'm getting MadCap:conditionalText elements in my output. <MadCap:conditionalText data-mc-conditions="Condition.Name">Click</MadCap:conditionalText> <b>Save</b> I'd prefer it if these tags were excluded from the output, as I feel it expose...

Re: Move a variable from one set to another

I don't think Flare supports dragging a variable out of one variable set into another. That's a shame; it would be a handy feature at times. I was tidying some legacy documentation, and there was one variable set that had a variable called "Product" and another variable called "Relea...

Move a variable from one set to another

Is it possible to move a variable from one set to another?

I know I could delete it in the old set, create it in the new set, and then use Analyzer to find all the places where the old one was used, but I'd like to be able to do something like dragging the variable from one set to another.

Re: Create a new group type (like div, blockquote etc)

Reason being - I need to do some bulk search'n'replace to convert the htm to an xml that a different system understands - and while I could differentiate between different classes when opening (<div> is different from <div class="xxx">) I can't differentiate when closing (it closes with <...

Re: One Project or Many?

It's not that having product-specific stuff in their own conditioned folders is in lieu of multiple TOCs. It's not. Rather, it is insurance that nothing goes "very wrong" as you alluded to above. If all the Product B files (topics, particularly) are segregated in their own folder, then it...

What advantage does that offer over, say, multiple ToCs?

Re: One Project or Many?

I can practically guarantee that there will be content *within* topics that are included in both PDF and HTML5 outputs that is meant only for PDF or only for HTML5. So in order to keep the "PDF only" stuff out of topics shared with your HTML5 target, you will need to exclude it from the H...

Re: One Project or Many?

If you plan to combine projects (for each product) together into a single project, then I'm pretty sure you're going to have to use conditions. If you want to build separate targets for each product, then you'll need to use conditions to exclude content for other products. I'm not sure what you mea...

Re: One Project or Many?

By "policy," I don't mean anything that is controlled by Flare. Rather, you have to establish a policy with your authoring team. "If you are not authorized to modify corporate-level stuff, don't!" From my point of view, that severely mitigates the benefit of GPL. A policy of &qu...

Re: One Project or Many?

As Margaret says, with global project linking, the corporate-level stuff that you want to lock down would be maintained in a corporate-level project (aka a global or parent project). You can enforce a policy that only a certain author or authors are allowed to make changes to things in that project...

Re: One Project or Many?

If the help is needed for different products, I would suggest separate projects for each, but keep your common files, like CSS, master pages, etc, in a global project/template and just import the common files in as needed using Global Project Linking. Read up on GPL : http://help.madcapsoftware.com...

Re: One Project or Many?

The advantage of having a CSS or page layout in only one place is appealing, but you can accomplish the same by copying the files from one project to the others assuming the file names are the same. No, you can't accomplish the same. Unless you and all your colleagues are unnaturally disciplined, t...

One Project or Many?

I've just taken over a few Flare projects. Each one is for a different product at my company. They all use the same CSS and page layouts and so on. I am thinking of combining them all into one project. This has the advantage that I just have to update the CSS and page layouts in one place, and it al...
