Re: Find and Replace, Relative Paths to Images folder...ug!
Heya Douglas, use Snippets for your relative paths. I've used them successfully to create relative paths to content outside of my project, as described in the following topic: http://forums.madcapsoftware.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=7223 You'd need to figure out the code for adding the snippet for ...

Re: Flare 4: Find and Replace Get Stuck in Loop
That's strange, it works for me when I set the Find In drop-down to (whole project), click Start, then click Find Next. It doesn't look like you're doing anything wrong. This might be a dumb question, but are you sure the term appears elsewhere in the project? If so, it might be time to open a suppo...

Re: Flare 4 slower than Flare 3.1
@help_dude: I know from experience that you need to present a legit case before companies are willing to spend money to fix problems. I'm sure Richard just meant that submitted tickets provide a lot more compelling evidence than a 6-page thread where half of the posts are gurus and techs offering su...

Re: X-edit General questions
Yeah actually, on my new work compy it runs fine. I think a lot of the reputation comes from when Vista was first released almost two years ago and they were loading it on computers with 512MB RAM. My wife bought a laptop and, even after we upgraded to 1GB RAM, Vista was REALLY slow. It's a monstrou...

Re: When to use the various condition out techniques
Yup, the conditions on the topics affect my TOC so I rarely use conditions in the TOC itself. However, if I have a topic that I want to use in multiple locations within the TOC, I sometimes have to put a condition on some of its entries if they appear underneath a conditional topic. For example, my ...

Re: Flare Tip
I realize this is probably three months too late to be helpful, Michelle, but... 1. Open your stylesheet (Content Explorer -> Resources -> Stylesheets). 2. Ensure you have Advanced View mode on. You should see a list of classes in the left pane and a set of Properties in the right. If you see previe...

Re: MadCap DITA Teaser Email
OK, I'd heard DITA bandied about, but I haven't really had any contact with it. Is it just an XML standard that defines tags and doc structure? If so, will MadCap DITA (if it exists) most likely just be Flare with some other stuff going on behind the scenes? What would be the benefit, though? I've b...

Good tip. I'll probably be transferring my online help into Word and PDF formats soon, so it's good to know what to expect even if there's no easy solution.

Re: Inserting Images into Expanding Text
I am able to insert images into both drop-downs and expanding text in v4. I admit I haven't really played with expanding text much in my project, but drop-down text definitely works fine with images in my experience. After testing the expanding text, it seems to work with images as well, whether I m...

Re: TOC for WebHelp
Awesome tip, Lisa. I was playing around with mini TOCs as a possible solution to recommend, but they do the opposite of what the OP is asking. On the bright side, now I not only understand how to use your bookmark solution, but I also have a much better grasp of mini TOCs!

Re: X-edit General questions
Anyone know if this works on Macs? I'm skeptical since it includes authoring functionality (and Flare is Windows-only), but nearly all of my dev team uses Macs, so it'd be extremely useful if they could review my work in X-Edit.

My company is finally settling into a short, relatively low-stress period, and I'm looking into X-Edit as an easy way to get my help reviewed. I, too, am curious about this question. Anyone know the answer?

Re: More Accessible Search
To expand on what Paul mentioned earlier, you can not only remove the search box from the toolbar (which I think most folks have done for the very reason you stated), but you can also add a search button that will open the main search in the leftnav. Open the skin, go to WebHelp toolbar, and add &qu...

Re: I've had to revert to Flare 3.1
Well, I've had my direct links (see the previous posts in this thread) in my app for a few weeks and they're working fine. The downside is that I can never alter the directory structure or filenames, but then again, I couldn't really alter them in my original call, which went through the CSH file.

Re: I've had to revert to Flare 3.1
Heh, I did use that format, Lisa. It's breaking my links for some unknown reason, although they used to work before I upgraded to 4.0 (I'm not convinced that it's the problem, but the timing makes it a suspect). For the moment, I'm not having any trouble linking directly to topics using the format I...

Re: Flare 4 slower than Flare 3.1
I'm probably a little fish swimming in a huge pond here, but I've noticed that, since Flare doesn't automatically close topics and maintains open topics in a project even if you close and re-open it, I can easily find myself with a whole lot of topics open at once. For whatever reason, these open to...

Re: I've had to revert to Flare 3.1
Yup, I had Default_CSH.htm in my original calls and it's redirecting to the Default_Left.htm URL with the StartTopic=null in it. Now, I'm just linking directly to /Output/target/Default_Left.htm#StartTopic=Content/Topic.htm and it seems to be working fine, so I'm sticking with those links for the mo...

Re: Relative paths in snippets
Sorry, I can understand the confusion. I wasn't very clear about that. As Kevin noted, it's only if you want to include a hyperlink inside of the snippet, and the link is relative instead of absolute (for example, if you want to use "../../NotMyFlareProject/videos/Linkpage.htm" instead of ...

Re: I've had to revert to Flare 3.1
Hmm, oki doke, I'll ask about that. I can access the pages if I remove the "null" from the redirected link and add in the "Content/" folder, though (which is my workaround, linking directly to that), so I don't think there are any access restrictions. EDIT: You know, that really ...

Re: I've had to revert to Flare 3.1
I noticed that, too, but when I tried it, I found that Flare adds the Content directory automatically so it ends up being redundant. I see in the target editor that I can choose whether or not to include Content as a top-level directory, so I'm guessing Flare adds code to the CSH file to add "C...

Relative paths in snippets
Hey folks, this is a neat tip that's probably old news to the pros here but might be useful to other newbies like me. I have video links in my project, which lead to files outside of the project itself but still in a persistent directory structure, so I used relative paths to link them, such as: ../...

Re: I've had to revert to Flare 3.1
That's very possible, Ramon. I don't know enough to check their stuff, so I'm working out my own fix. As a wise man once said, "Mongo only pawn in game of life." :D Since I'm on a tight schedule, here's my solution for the moment. Instead of linking to topics through the CSH file, I'm link...
